Tell us about Wildkidsbooksa…

What prompted you to start Wildkidsbooksa?
Wildkidsbooksa emerged from a need for literature that speaks to South African children, emphasizing wildlife, nature, and conservation, which became apparent as I embarked on homeschooling my daughter, Sophia, in grade one. My own children, Sophia, Asher, and Isla-Mae became the protagonists in stories I crafted to teach them about the wonders of wildlife and the importance of conservation. All my book series have a common theme of nature, wildlife, conservation, adventure and finding joy in our wild places.

Why is it important for children to learn about conservation?
For me personally, I feel that conservation isn’t adequately addressed in schools, despite its crucial role in South Africa’s economy and cultural heritage. With the tourism sector contributing significantly to our GDP, it’s vital for children to understand the value of protecting our natural resources for future generations. The foundation of developing a passion for anything, starts by exposing young children to a variety of topics while learning and exposing children to the fascinating and important world of conservation is vital for our wildlife’s future.

How do your books teach children conservation / what lesson do children
learn from your books?
Wildkidsbooksa brings to life the adventures of children in the wilderness and their interactions with wild animals, fostering a passion for nature and a commitment to conservation. By presenting these subjects in an engaging and accessible manner, it helps children understand the significance of safeguarding wildlife and natural environments, all while reveling in the thrill of outdoor exploration.

Most of our CAP Kids’ families are also homeschoolers. Can you tell us a bit more about your homeschooling experience?

Why did you choose homeschool for your family?
Homeschooling was a natural choice for our family. I believe in providing my children with a balanced childhood, free from the pressures and influences of traditional schooling. They have the freedom to learn what interests them, they nurture their interests, and they have loads of free-play and sunshine. Often our homeschooling days look like lessons under a tree and time in nature, interlaced with Bible study and prayer together. These things are so important to me to include in their little lives, and homeschooling provides us with the flexibility to nurture our children’s holistic development. Homeschooling allows me to tailor their education to their interests and needs while fostering a stress-free environment for learning.

Can you share one thing that you love about homeschooling?

One of the most rewarding aspects of homeschooling is witnessing my children’s joy as they grasp new concepts,
explore their interests, and develop new skills. Finding happiness in learning and reading will enable them to be life-long learners, always wanting to learn more because they have grown up believing that learning is fun.

Books can teach children about conservation by connecting them with the natural world and empowering them to care for our planet. For instance, they can learn about the importance of clean freshwater, the diverse wildlife in rainforests, and the impact of waste on the environment. Through engaging stories and activities, children can become informed about environmental issues and inspired to take action in protecting our Earth.
