Autism Awareness Event: 26 October 2024

“The “Not a Disability but a Ability” foundation, spearheaded by the visionary Bongiwe Leepiloe, is hosting an autism awareness event that promises to be a day of enlightenment, empowerment, and enjoyment.”

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors. The effects of ASD and the severity of symptoms are different in each person. It’s not a disability; it’s a different ability that brings a unique perspective to the world.

In the heart of Tembisa, a special event is unfolding that celebrates this unique perspective. The “Not a Disability but a Ability” foundation, spearheaded by the visionary Bongiwe Leepiloe, is hosting an autism awareness event that promises to be a day of enlightenment, empowerment, and enjoyment.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of T-Shad in Tembisa, this event, scheduled for the 26th of October, 2024, from 9 am to 2 pm, is more than just an event; it’s a beacon of hope. For a modest fee of R250, which includes a meal, adults can immerse themselves in a day filled with insightful sessions led by a professional ABA therapist. These sessions are designed to equip caregivers with effective tools and understanding to support children with autism.

But it’s not all learning; there’s plenty of fun to be had as well. A play area brimming with activities ensures that children can enjoy their day to the fullest, free of charge. It’s a day where laughter and learning coexist, where understanding deepens, and where the community comes together to support one another.

The foundation is reaching out to kind-hearted individuals and organizations for sponsorships or donations. Your generosity can provide toys and equipment for the play area, as well as food and drinks for the attendees, creating a memorable experience for all involved.

To be a part of this inspiring initiative, contact Bongiwe Leepiloe via WhatsApp at 0719681034 or email Notadisabilitybutability@gmail.com. Your support can make a world of difference in the lives of those touched by autism. Join us in embracing the abilities within the spectrum and celebrating the extraordinary in every child.

CAP Kids Triumphs with the 2024 Readers Choice Award for 'Best Online School'

From Legislation to Learning: How the BELA Bill Could Transform Homeschooling

From Legislation to Learning: How the BELA Bill Could Transform Homeschooling

CAP Kids Triumphs with the 2024 Readers Choice Award for 'Best Online School'

“It is important to note that the BELA Bill does not signify the end of homeschooling in South Africa. Instead, it provides more guidance and structure to the practice, potentially enhancing its perception within the broader education sector. Homeschooling remains a legal alternative to attending public or private schools.”

Understanding the BELA Bill and Its Implications for Homeschooling in South Africa

The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill has been a topic of significant discussion among educators, parents, and policymakers in South Africa. This proposed legislation has raised questions and concerns, particularly within the homeschooling community. Here, we delve into what the BELA Bill entails and the potential implications it holds for homeschoolers should it become law.

What is the BELA Bill?

The BELA Bill is a piece of proposed legislation intended to amend several South African education laws, including the South African Schools Act (SASA) of 1996 and the Home Education Policy of 2018. The primary aim of the bill is to ensure that every child in South Africa receives an education that meets or exceeds the quality of education provided in public schools.

Key Provisions Affecting Homeschoolers

One of the notable changes proposed by the BELA Bill is the introduction of Grade R as the new compulsory school starting age, as opposed to the current Grade 1. This amendment could have a direct impact on homeschooling parents, who would need to begin their educational provision from an earlier age.

Furthermore, the bill seeks to increase the penalties for preventing a child of compulsory school-going age from attending school. While this may seem stringent, the intention behind this provision is to safeguard the right to education for all children. It is not aimed at discouraging homeschooling but rather at ensuring compliance with educational standards.

Registration and Regulation

Clause 37 of the BELA Bill has garnered particular attention, as it requires all homeschooled learners to be registered with the Department of Basic Education. This clause aims to bring increased regulation to homeschooling, ensuring that the education provided at home aligns with the national curriculum and standards.

The Future of Homeschooling

It is important to note that the BELA Bill does not signify the end of homeschooling in South Africa. Instead, it provides more guidance and structure to the practice, potentially enhancing its perception within the broader education sector. Homeschooling remains a legal alternative to attending public or private schools, and as long as parents comply with the provisions set out by the bill, there should be no cause for concern regarding penalties.

In conclusion, the BELA Bill represents a step towards more regulated and standardized education across all forms of schooling in South Africa. For homeschooling parents, staying informed and prepared for these changes is crucial. By understanding the requirements and ensuring compliance, homeschoolers can continue to provide quality education for their children, tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.

For more detailed information and updates on the BELA Bill, parents and educators are encouraged to consult the official documents and resources provided by the Department of Basic Education and reputable educational organizations.

For further reading and to stay updated on the BELA Bill, consider exploring the following resources:

– Impaq’s analysis of the BELA Bill’s relevance to homeschoolers.
– BusinessTech’s report on how the BELA Bill will affect homeschooling in South Africa.

These sources provide valuable information for understanding the BELA Bill and its potential effects on homeschooling in South Africa. As the bill progresses, it will be crucial for homeschooling parents to remain engaged with the legislative process and adapt to any changes that may come.

The benefits of sensory play a guide to fostering development and learning

The Benefits of Sensory Play: A Guide to Fostering Development and Learning

The Benefits of Sensory Play: A Guide to Fostering Development and Learning

The benefits of sensory play a guide to fostering development and learning

“The key with sensory play is to provide a variety of textures, colors, and shapes for children to explore.”

Sensory play is a vital part of childhood development, offering a treasure trove of benefits that can shape a child’s growth in profound ways. This type of play involves activities that stimulate a child’s senses—touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight, and hearing—which in turn supports the development of cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, physical, and creative abilities.

Sensory Play Activities and Ideas

Sensory play can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. From playing with rice or pasta in a bin to exploring textured materials, the possibilities are endless. Sensory play ideas can range from outdoor exploration, like a nature walk to feel different leaves or listen to bird sounds, to indoor activities such as finger painting or playing with playdough.

Sensory Play for Children of All Ages

Sensory play is not just for toddlers or babies; it’s beneficial for children of all ages. For toddlers, it helps them explore their world, while older children can delve deeper into scientific concepts or artistic expressions through sensory play materials.

The Materials: Choosing the Right Sensory Play Tools

The beauty of sensory play lies in its versatility. Sensory play materials can include everyday items found at home, like sponges, cotton balls, and water, or specialized sensory play equipment like sand tables or water beads. The key is to provide a variety of textures, colors, and shapes for children to explore.

Unveiling the Benefits: Why Sensory Play Matters

Sensory play benefits are extensive. It enhances fine and gross motor skills, encourages problem-solving, and can improve focus and attention. Sensory play development is seen as children learn to assess risks and develop their sensory attributes.

Learning Through Sensory Play

Sensory play learning is hands-on and experiential. It allows children to process information through their senses, which is a natural way for them to learn. Sensory play can also be therapeutic, offering sensory play therapy benefits for children who may have sensory processing issues or autism.

Sensory Play at Home: Integrating Learning into Daily Life

Incorporating sensory play at home is easy and can be a fun bonding activity. Creating a sensory play area design in a corner of a room or in the backyard can provide a dedicated space for children to engage in sensory play. This can include a mix of homemade and store-bought sensory play examples and equipment.

Sensory Play and Special Needs

Sensory play and autism are often discussed together because sensory play can be particularly beneficial for children on the spectrum. It can help them navigate sensory sensitivities and improve social interaction skills. Sensory play for babies, too, is crucial as it lays the foundation for sensory integration as they grow.

Designing a Sensory Play Area

A well-thought-out sensory play area design can provide a safe and stimulating environment for children. It can be indoors or outdoors, with sections dedicated to different sensory experiences—soft, rough, squishy, hard, and everything in between.

In conclusion, sensory play is more than just play. It’s a critical component of early childhood development that prepares children for a lifetime of learning. By incorporating sensory play activities and ideas into daily routines, parents and educators can provide children with the tools they need to thrive in every aspect of their lives. Whether it’s through sensory play for toddlers, sensory play for babies, or sensory play therapy, the impact of these experiences is invaluable and long-lasting.

Safe Surfing: Teaching Children to Use the Internet Responsibly

“The internet can expose children to various dangers, including cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and the risk of online predators. Through interactive lessons with Codey Crawler, children learn about internet security, digital rights, and responsible online behaviour.” – Social Kids

In South Africa, a new wave of internet-savvy kids is emerging, thanks to innovative programs like Social Kids, which offers Internet Safety Courses for children. This initiative not only educates children but also involves parents, providing them with resources to guide their kids in the digital age.

In today’s digital world, South African children are becoming increasingly internet-savvy, navigating the online world with an ease that often surpasses that of their parents. This digital fluency offers numerous benefits, such as access to educational resources, platforms for creative expression, and opportunities for social interaction. However, with these opportunities come inherent risks. The internet can expose children to various dangers, including cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and the risk of online predators.

To combat these risks, internet safety courses like the one offered by Social Kids are invaluable. These courses are designed to empower children with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the internet safely and responsibly. Through engaging activities and interactive lessons, children learn about cybersecurity, privacy, and the importance of thinking critically about the information they share online.

Parents play a crucial role in this educational journey. By participating in the course alongside their children, they can foster open communication about online experiences and potential dangers. This collaborative approach not only enhances the learning experience but also strengthens the parent-child relationship, creating a supportive environment for discussing internet safety.

Investing in an internet safety course is an investment in your child’s future. It equips them with the skills to protect themselves online and instills a sense of digital citizenship that will serve them well throughout their lives. Kayleigh Huysamen, a South African author

Kayleigh Huysamen, a South African author

Introducing Kayleigh Huysamen, a South African author known for "Wildkidsbooksa," and a homeschooling mother of three.

Kayleigh Huysamen, a South African author

My own children, Sophia, Asher, and Isla-Mae became the protagonists in stories I crafted to teach them about the wonders of wildlife and the importance of conservation.” – Kayleigh Huysamen

Tell us about Wildkidsbooksa…

What prompted you to start Wildkidsbooksa?
Wildkidsbooksa emerged from a need for literature that speaks to South African children, emphasizing wildlife, nature, and conservation, which became apparent as I embarked on homeschooling my daughter, Sophia, in grade one. My own children, Sophia, Asher, and Isla-Mae became the protagonists in stories I crafted to teach them about the wonders of wildlife and the importance of conservation. All my book series have a common theme of nature, wildlife, conservation, adventure and finding joy in our wild places.

Why is it important for children to learn about conservation?
For me personally, I feel that conservation isn’t adequately addressed in schools, despite its crucial role in South Africa’s economy and cultural heritage. With the tourism sector contributing significantly to our GDP, it’s vital for children to understand the value of protecting our natural resources for future generations. The foundation of developing a passion for anything, starts by exposing young children to a variety of topics while learning and exposing children to the fascinating and important world of conservation is vital for our wildlife’s future.

How do your books teach children conservation / what lesson do children
learn from your books?
Wildkidsbooksa brings to life the adventures of children in the wilderness and their interactions with wild animals, fostering a passion for nature and a commitment to conservation. By presenting these subjects in an engaging and accessible manner, it helps children understand the significance of safeguarding wildlife and natural environments, all while reveling in the thrill of outdoor exploration.

Most of our CAP Kids’ families are also homeschoolers. Can you tell us a bit more about your homeschooling experience?

Why did you choose homeschool for your family?
Homeschooling was a natural choice for our family. I believe in providing my children with a balanced childhood, free from the pressures and influences of traditional schooling. They have the freedom to learn what interests them, they nurture their interests, and they have loads of free-play and sunshine. Often our homeschooling days look like lessons under a tree and time in nature, interlaced with Bible study and prayer together. These things are so important to me to include in their little lives, and homeschooling provides us with the flexibility to nurture our children’s holistic development. Homeschooling allows me to tailor their education to their interests and needs while fostering a stress-free environment for learning.

Can you share one thing that you love about homeschooling?

One of the most rewarding aspects of homeschooling is witnessing my children’s joy as they grasp new concepts,
explore their interests, and develop new skills. Finding happiness in learning and reading will enable them to be life-long learners, always wanting to learn more because they have grown up believing that learning is fun.

Books can teach children about conservation by connecting them with the natural world and empowering them to care for our planet. For instance, they can learn about the importance of clean freshwater, the diverse wildlife in rainforests, and the impact of waste on the environment. Through engaging stories and activities, children can become informed about environmental issues and inspired to take action in protecting our Earth.

Reading Aloud to Your Children Helps Raise Stronger Readers

Reading Aloud to Your Children Helps Raise Stronger Readers

Cap Kids Educational Resources - Homeschooling

Reading aloud to children is a delightful and powerful activity that has numerous benefits for their development. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or educator, here’s why you should make reading aloud a daily habit and how it contributes to raising stronger readers:

The Importance of Reading Aloud to Children

1. Supported Cognitive Development

Reading to young children significantly enhances their cognitive skills. As they listen to stories, their brains form new neural connections, strengthening existing ones and adding complexity to their thought processes. These connections help children understand their world, improve memory, and develop reasoning abilities1.

2. Improved Language Skills

When you read aloud, children are exposed to a rich vocabulary. Regardless of the book’s subject, they encounter new words and phrases. This exposure contributes to language development, making it easier for them to express themselves and communicate effectively.

3. Preparation for Academic Success

Early exposure to reading sets the stage for academic achievement. Children who are read to regularly develop essential literacy skills, such as recognizing letters, understanding text structure, and grasping phonemic awareness (the ability to hear sounds in spoken words) 2.

4. Developing a Special Bond

Reading together creates a unique bond between adults and children. It’s a shared experience that fosters emotional connections and positive associations with books. Plus, snuggling up with a good story is a wonderful way to strengthen relationships.

5. Increased Concentration and Discipline

Listening to a story requires focus and attention. Regular reading sessions help children build concentration skills, which are crucial for academic tasks and everyday life.

6. Improved Imagination and Creativity

Stories transport children to magical worlds, sparking their imagination. They visualize characters, settings, and events, enhancing their creativity and ability to think beyond the ordinary.

7. Cultivating a Lifelong Love of Reading

When children associate reading with pleasure, they’re more likely to become lifelong readers. The joy of sharing stories lays the foundation for a love of books that will serve them well throughout their lives.

Sources for Further Reading

Remember, every story shared is an opportunity to nurture a child’s mind and heart. So grab a book, find a cozy spot, and embark on a reading adventure together! 📚✨
